I love this muddy buddies recipe as it is, but here are some more ideas for you:
- Toss green sprinkles in the powdered sugar before coating the muddy buddies.
- Change the flavouring by using different extracts.
- Use green candy melts for half of the muddy buddies instead of using green food dye.
- Use other candies. Green jelly beans are a delicious add-in.
How to Store Muddy Buddies
Store these in an airtight container or large resealable bag at room temperature for up to two weeks.
Muddy Buddies are easy to make ahead of time, so feel free to put together a big batch and have it ready for when guests arrive.
They also freeze really well! Just put them into individual baggies or containers, then pop into the freezer for up to 6 months. When you’re ready to enjoy them, take the frozen mixture out of the freezer and let it thaw for a bit at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
Portion them into sandwich size baggies so you can easily pop one out whenever you want a treat!
About the Ingredients for St. Patrick’s Day Puppy Chow
Cereal – You want to use wheat, corn, or rice Chex cereal for this snack. I usually use rice Chex.
Chocolate chips – You can use candy melts instead of white chocolate chips, but using real chocolate tastes much better.
Peanut butter – Use your favourite smooth and creamy peanut butter. You can also substitute with any other nut or seed butter. You should avoid natural-style peanut butter though as it can be too oily.
Butter – Unsalted or salted butter works here.
Powdered sugar – Icing sugar or confectioners sugar.
Candy – We used peanut M&Ms, but you can swap in any kind of green candy coated chocolate candy.
Marshmallows – You can buy just the lucky charms marshmallows, or buy a box of lucky charms cereal and sort them out yourself. Also feel free to be more generous with the amount used.
