Ingredients

  • Avocados: Avocado flesh from ripe medium Haas avocados
  • Lime: Juice one lime
  • Red Onion: Mince a third cup of red onion
  • Garlic: Mash one small garlic clove
  • Cilantro: If you don’t like cilantro, omit it
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Tomato and Jalapeño: Although we usually prefer our guacamole without tomato and jalapeño, you can add it if you desire. Use serrano pepper to make it extra spicy.

How to make guacamole:

  1. Start with perfectly ripe avocados. If it’s too hard, or over-ripe, the results will be less than stellar.
  2. The trick is to a good guacamole is leave large chunks of avocado for the best consistency; don’t puree or mash them thoroughly.
  3. Having the perfect balance of lime juice, red onion and salt is essential.
  4. If you like it spicy, you can add some diced jalapeño, some people also like to add diced tomato which is fine, but we like it just like this!

Tips For Making Guacamole Ahead:

  • Guacamole really is best when made fresh. But, if need to make it a little ahead of time, put the pits in the bowl with it, along with some cut up lime wedges and cover it tightly with plastic wrap on the surface of the guacamole. Place in refrigerator a few hours until ready to eat.
  • Adding extra lime juice help prevent browning.
  • I recommend making it the same day, but if you must this should keep 1 day. If the top browns, scrape the top off and the rest should be green.
  • Refrigerate leftovers up to 24 hours.

What to serve with Guacamole

Guacamole dip is great with baked tortilla chips, lentil chips, orAir Fryer Tostones. I like it on top of nachos, chicken fajitas, tacos, or tostadas. You can also spread it on a wrap, sandwich, or turkey burgers instead of mayonnaise.

What makes guacamole taste better? ›

Fresh lime juice and zest – They make the guacamole zesty and bright. Jalapeño – For heat. Feel free to omit it if you're sensitive to spice. A serrano pepper would work here too!

What kind of onion is best for guacamole? ›

Most people prefer to use sweet white onion in their guacamole recipe. Red or yellow onion tends to give the guacamole too strong of a garlic flavor.

How can I improve my guacamole? ›

Season to Taste.

Next, add lime juice. Often an additional pop of citrus is all guac needs to come alive and taste better. If you still aren't happy with the taste, you can rely on mix-ins to jazz it up. Try adding cilantro, salsa, a diced jalapeno or serrano pepper, feta cheese, or a few dashes of hot sauce.

Why you should leave the lime out of guacamole? ›

Lime is an integral part of great guacamole—or so we thought. Turns out, you get to taste and enjoy the pure flavor of avocado better in guacamole without the lime.

Should guacamole have tomatoes? ›

Tomatoes are great — but not in guac.

They don't add anything other than filler. When you eat guac, what you want is creamy avocado, fresh lime, savory onion, salt, and maybe a little cilantro, if that's your thing. I'm never putting tomatoes in my guacamole and neither should you.

What does Subway put in their guacamole? ›

According to the Subway website, their guacamole contains Hass avocados, jalapeno puree (white vinegar, jalapeno peppers, salt), onion, garlic, and sea salt.

What color avocado is best for guacamole? ›

If you're making guacamole the same day you're shopping, a dark green avocado is what you need. However if you're using the avocados days after you purchase them, it's best to buy them green so they can ripen perfectly at home and will be ready by the day you need them.

Why do you leave the avocado pit in guacamole? ›

The verdict: Contrary to popular belief, adding the avocado pit to guacamole does not prevent oxidation. In fact, if it sticks out above the surface, it creates air pockets that prevent the plastic wrap from adhering tightly enough.

How do Mexican restaurants keep their guacamole fresh? ›

Pour a thin but visible layer of water or lemon/lime juice over the guacamole to form a barrier with the air. Cover the dish with plastic wrap, pushing the wrap, so it is flush with the guacamole to prevent air pockets, or put the guacamole in a sealed tub.

Why does guacamole go bad so fast? ›

"The flesh of the avocado oxidizes quickly — much like a cut apple — which changes the color.

Why put olive oil in guacamole? ›

Olive oil is rich in healthy fats and imparts a subtle richness to guacamole that makes it even more satisfying. In addition, it can help to prevent the avocado from turning brown too quickly by forming a barrier between the surface of the guacamole and the air.

Can you put too much lemon in guacamole? ›

5- Adding too much of lemon juice

Preparing guacamole without mistakes also lies in the amount of lemon that is added. The lemon juice is used to give it a sour touch, and prevent it from oxidizing. However, adding too much will bitter the flavor of your guacamole.

What makes guacamole unhealthy? ›

Store-bought guacamole often contains sour cream, added sugar, artificial flavors, preservatives, and a lot of sodium.

Why do people put sour cream in guacamole? ›

Sour cream is a simple addition to your favorite guacamole recipe. Just a few tablespoons to a small batch recipe will do it. The sour cream adds a nice tang without being too overbearing and it also creates a creamy, silky mouthfeel. A fabulous contrast to the crunch of tortilla chips.

Why is restaurant guacamole so green? ›

It isn't exposed to air

When avocados are exposed to air, they begin to oxidize. That's when and why they start to turn brown. But if you can eliminate any contact with air, guacamole — or even an avocado half — can be stored for longer without changing colors.

Does lime juice help guacamole? ›

All you really need to make guacamole is ripe avocados and salt. After that, a little lime or lemon juice—a splash of acidity—will help balance the richness of the avocado. If you want, add chopped cilantro, chilis, onion, and/or tomato.

Why do you put milk in guacamole? ›

Add milk or cream to make your guacamole denser. Place slices or cubes of fresh cheese on top of your guac. Add chopped mint to make your guacamole even fresher. Mango cubes add an unexpected touch and also keep your guac from turning brown.
