Soup Maker Onion Soup

I have had many visits to France. Trips in the motorhome with my parents growing up, travelling through France with the hubby and I love the simplicity of the French food.

The fact that like you see in the Movie Julie vs Julia, that a lot of it, is about simple ingredients but giving them the wow factor.

How you can go out and have chicken in a tomato sauce and think it’s the best food in the world.

Or how they make an amazing pizza or pasta dish.

But many of my trips to France as a kid was in the winter months. And with France having cold winters like England, you always appreciated the warm French onion soup to warm you up on those cold winter days.

I would get excited if I went to a French café if French onion soup was the soup of the day. Especially for the melted cheese over the French bread that was perfectly positioned over the bowl of soup.

Today I wanted to share with you how to make French onion soup using the soup maker.

We will be dumping the French onion soup ingredients into the soup maker, then using the air fryer to melt the Swiss cheese onto the bread.

Can You Make French Onion Soup In A Soup Maker?

Yes, you can make French onion soup in the soup maker. Its brilliant because you can use the soup maker to sauté the onion in the butter, then cook the onions with the other ingredients in a stock.

Its amazing because of how hands free you are and that the soup maker is doing all the hard work for you.

Though what you can’t achieve is the cheese bread topping within the soup maker and that is what I use the air fryer for.

Ninja Soup Maker French Onion Soup

Our easy French onion soup is made with the Ninja soup maker. I like the Ninja Soup Maker the most, because it has a very good sauté on it and as well as this you have a clear glass container and can easily see the onion soup as it cooks.

You can also make onion soup using the Morphy Richards, though you will need to be more careful with this brand because its sauté is not as good and you don’t want to burn it.

Why Is French Soup So Bad For You?

Because it is French!

All jokes aside, French onion soup is known for its butter, its bread, and its melted Swiss cheese.

Whilst it is one of the best ever comfort soups you will ever eat and perfect for warming you up in winter, these ingredients are not what you would recommend in a whole foods diet.

Which Onions Are Best For French Onion Soup?

I would recommend French onion soup made with white onions. They give the best taste and flavour to an onion soup.

You can also make a French onion soup with red onions, but as they are not as strong, you wont get the same wow factor.

Onions – I recommend making a white onion soup in the soup maker. Just grab a few large white onions from your pantry and this will make the best soup.

Butter – What makes French onion soup so good (and most French food) is the way they add butter to their recipes. This onion soup in the soup maker can be made with any butter, any olive oil spread or any margarine.

Garlic – Another French classic ingredient is garlic. You can make your life a million times easier by buying frozen chopped garlic and then add it from frozen into the soup maker.

Wine – I also recommend some white wine for your onion soup. Butter, garlic and white wine go so well together and you will love how yummy it makes your soup.

Stock – There is often a debate with French onion soup to which stock you should use. I am keeping this French onion soup vegetarian by using my instant pot veggie stock, though you could use any stock.

Seasonings – For seasonings, we are keeping it simple with salt, pepper, and thyme. The veggie stock and the garlic and wine are the main flavours and you don’t want to take the taste away from this.

Topping – Then for the cheesy bread topping a French bread stick cut into slices, or any other similar bread will work well. Then any grated cheese on top that melts well. Though traditionally for French onion soup this is either French cheese or Swiss cheese. Though if you can get it, the traditional cheese to use is gruyere.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this onion soup in soup maker it has just been our Ninja Soup Maker. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of soup maker recipes.
